Whether you’re dealing with a sports field, a large landscaped property or your own backyard, keeping your turf verdant and healthy requires some work. Too much foot traffic, poor weather, lack of sunlight, pests, drought and many other factors can cause your turf to look dry and patchy. As a responsible lawn-care professional, you’ll want to do what you can to make sure that your turf has everything it needs to grow.

Manor Home Center in Oakland is your Maryland John Deere® lawn mower dealer, serving Garrett County and Morgantown, West Virginia. Below, you’ll find some of our top turf renovation tips so you can get your grass looking lush and green again.

1. Improve Access to Sunlight

Like any other plant, grass needs sunshine in order to photosynthesize nutrients and flourish. While some types of grass may not need as much sun, all grasses are going to need some sunlight in order to thrive. If your grass is too shaded, it can be helpful to prune bushes and trees that might be providing a little too much shade over certain parts of your lawn. Otherwise, you may want to replace those shady areas with other types of ground cover that will grow better without much direct sunlight.

2. Curb Weed Growth

Crabgrass and other types of invasive weeds and grasses can make your lawn look unhealthy and cause patches to form or even make your soil erode over time. Choose an herbicide that can deal with the invading plants without harming your turf and stay on top of mowing your lawn with your John Deere® mower to keep offending growths at bay.

3. Eliminate Patchiness

Bald spots on your lawn never look great, and they can expand if left untreated. You may need to pick up a soil-testing kit to figure out whether your soil’s pH levels are out of balance, since poor nutrition is a common cause of grass dying off. Once you’ve added fertilizer and other nutrients to your soil, you can then replant grass seeds and carefully manage their growth until those bald patches fill in again.

4. Kill Off Grubs

Grubs are known to gnaw at the roots of delicate grass shoots, killing your lawn. Not only that, but if there are too many grubs in your soil, predators that want to eat them may come onto your lawn and do even more damage, including moles and birds. Talk to a local cooperative extension office to figure out what type of pesticides to apply to reduce the grubs you have, and try to use these measures at the start of the growing season.
